Led By Former Microsofties, GitHub Brings The Party To Enterprise With New Windows Client

Screen shot 2012-05-21 at 12.43.04 PMGitHub, the source code hosting and collaboration service, has been growing like gangbusters. The site now has over 1.6 million registered developers, hosting over 2.8 million repositories on everything from jQuery and Ruby on Rails to node.js and Redis. At the outset, Github was just a side project, a tool to make developers' lives easier (its first slogan: "Git hosting: No longer a pain in the ass.") Github is still a boot-strapped operation, but as both its user base and its own hacker collective (now at 73 strong) have grown, there has been an increasing demand for tools that fall outside Apple's domain. Today, about 50 percent of GitHub's traffic comes from Windows users, and, as a result, the startup has finally heeded demand and is now officially bringing the party to Windows, launching a desktop app to address the challenges of developing on Windows and to make it easy for Windows developers to collaborate in open-source and private repositories.

The fundamentals OF TENNIS.

I have faith in this initial work of mine on the planet of letters will come across a spot among both novices and professionals inside the tennis planet. I am striving to interest the college student with the sport by a relatively prolonged dialogue of match perform, which I believe in will shed a new mild within the video game.

Might I turn to the amateur at my opening and speak of certain matters which are 2nd character for the skilled participant?

The ideal tennis equipment isn?t as well great for your newbie who seeks definitely to succeed. It?s a saving in the finish, as superior excellent material so far outlasts bad.

Usually dress in tennis outfits when engaging in tennis. The query of picking a racquet is usually a considerably more significant matter. I don?t advocate forcing a specific racquet upon any player. All of the standard tends to make are fantastic. It really is in weight, stability, and dimension of deal with the real value of a racquet body relies upon, though fantastic stringing is, critical to obtain the most effective outcomes.

After you?ve got acquired your racquet, create a company solve to utilize fantastic tennis balls, as a typical bounce is a superb assist to development, though a ?dead? ball is no apply in any way.

For those who definitely want to be successful at the recreation and advance quickly, I strongly urge you to see all the fantastic tennis you are able to. Research the play in the leading gamers and try to repeat their strokes. Read all of the tennis instruction books you could find. They are a great assistance.

Far more tennis is usually learned off the court, in the study of principle, and in viewing the very best players in motion, than can actually be discovered in real play. I don?t indicate skip possibilities to perform. Far from it. Perform when probable, but strive when taking part in to place in practice the theories you have got go through or perhaps the strokes you?ve viewed.

By no means be discouraged at slow development. The trick more than some stroke you have labored more than for weeks unsuccessfully will suddenly come to you personally when the very least anticipated. Tennis gamers are the product of tough work. Quite few are born geniuses in the activity.

Tennis is an activity that pays you dividends all of your daily life. A tennis racquet is a letter of introduction in any town. The brotherhood of the recreation is universal, for none but an excellent sportsman can do well inside the activity for any lengthy time period. Tennis provides leisure, pleasure, workout, and pure enjoyment for the guy who?s tied difficult and fast to his business until late afternoon. Age isn?t a disadvantage. The tennis gamers with the globe wrote a magnificent web page in the history of the World War. No department of sport sent additional guys to the colours from each and every country in the world than tennis, and these guys returned with glory or compensated the supreme sacrifice around the field of honour.

The subsequent buy of development creates the fastest and most long lasting results:

1. Focus to the recreation.

2. Keep the eye on the ball.

3. Foot-work and weight-control.

4. Strokes.

5. Court position.

6. Court generalship or match play.

7. Tennis psychology.

focus.
?????

Tennis is played primarily with all the thoughts. One of the most fantastic racquet technique in the world won?t suffice when the directing thoughts is wandering. There are many causes of the wandering thoughts in a tennis match. The chief one is insufficient interest inside the match. No one ought to play tennis by having an thought of genuine success unless he cares sufficiently in regards to the game to be willing to do the drudgery required in studying the sport correctly. Give it up at when except if you?re willing to operate. Conditions of play or perhaps the noises inside the gallery frequently confuse and bewilder knowledgeable match-players taking part in below new surroundings. Full concentration on the make any difference in hand is the only remedy to get a wandering mind, plus the sooner the lesson is realized the much more rapid the enhancement of the participant.

The surest approach to hold a match in thoughts will be to play for each and every set, each and every activity inside the set, each and every point within the video game and, lastly, each and every shot in the stage. A set is merely a conglomeration of produced and missed photographs, plus the man who will not skip would be the greatest victor.

Rev. Richard L. Killmer: An Apology to Maher Arar -- Moving Beyond the Season of Fear

Since 9/11, there has been a vigorous debate in this country about the morality, legality and efficacy of using torture as a means of obtaining needed information. It is clear that President Bush believes that torture is sometimes needed, while President Obama believes that torture is always wrong and that information can be collected using other legal and moral methods.

It is important that the discussions about torture always keep the experiences of survivors of torture clearly in mind. More can be learned about the unfathomable horror that torture survivors experienced from the Torture Abolition Survivors Support Coalition International.

Maher Arar is a torture survivor. In 2002, acting on information from the Canadian government, the U.S. government seized Arar, a Canadian citizen, at JFK Airport in New York and held him for 12 days without charge. Our government then sent him to Syria -- the technical term for transferring a prisoner to a third-party country is "rendered" -- where the U.S. government knew that it was likely he would be tortured.

He was detained by Syria for 12 months -- 10 of which were spent confined to a small, underground cell -- and he was tortured. Arar reports that he was beaten regularly with shredded cables, and locked in a 3-foot by 6-foot "grave" with no light and many rats.

Mr. Arar was released and returned to Canada. Canada has since conducted a thorough investigation into Arar's arrest, torture and detention, and has cleared him of any connection to terrorist activities. As a result of its investigation, the Canadian government formally apologized to Arar because it provided inaccurate information to the U.S. government that led to his torture. The Canadian government also paid Arar millions in compensation.

In sharp contrast to its northern neighbor, the United States not only has failed to apologize to Arar, it has actively blocked his attempts to secure such remedy. In 2009, the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed a lawsuit, filed by Arar and the Center for Constitutional Rights. The Supreme Court declined to consider an appeal.

On Monday, May 21, the National Religious Campaign Against Torture joins with Amnesty International USA and the Center for Constitutional Rights in delivering more than 60,000 names of people who have signed statements urging President Obama to issue a formal apology to Arar.

The date is significant because on May 21, 2009, President Obama gave a speech on national security at the National Archives, in which he said:

Unfortunately, faced with an uncertain threat, our government made a series of hasty decisions. I believe that many of these decisions were motivated by a sincere desire to protect the American people. But I also believe that all too often our government made decisions based on fear rather than foresight; that all too often our government trimmed facts and evidence to fit ideological predispositions. Instead of strategically applying our power and our principles, too often we set those principles aside as luxuries that we could no longer afford. During this season of fear, too many of us -- Democrats and Republicans, politicians, journalists and citizens -- fell silent.

President Obama has sought to move this country beyond the season of fear. Now is the time for the President to issue a formal apology to torture survivor Maher Arar, who was one of the victims of the "hasty decisions" he mentions.

The delivery to the White House of the names of those urging President Obama to issue an apology to Arar also will mark the anniversary of President Reagan's statement to the U.S. Senate on May 20, 1988, after signing the UN Convention Against Torture. President Reagan noted that:

"Ratification of the Convention by the United States will clearly express United States opposition to torture, an abhorrent practice unfortunately still prevalent in the world today."

An apology is appropriate to Maher Arar because torture is a moral abomination. It runs contrary to the teachings of all religions. It is an egregious violation of the dignity and worth of every person. The Golden Rule makes it clear: Torture should not be perpetrated on others because we would not want others to torture us.

Max Scherzer's 15 Ks help Tigers beat Pirates 4-3

DETROIT (AP) ? Max Scherzer struck out 15 ? the most by a Detroit pitcher in 40 years ? and the Tigers rallied for him with three runs in the seventh inning to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Sunday.

Scherzer (3-3) threw 115 pitches in seven innings and was done for the day when the Tigers came back from a 2-1 deficit while he was still the pitcher of record. Alex Avila hit a two-run single through a drawn-in infield to put Detroit ahead.

Pittsburgh scored a run in the ninth off Joaquin Benoit, but he held on for his first save this season.

Kevin Correia (1-5) allowed three runs in six-plus innings.

Mickey Lolich had 15 strikeouts for the Tigers in a 1972 game and set the club record of 16 in 1969.

Scherzer's 15 strikeouts were the most by a major league pitcher this year. Miami's Anibal Sanchez had 14 against Arizona on April 28.

Scherzer allowed seven runs in 2 2-3 innings in his first start of the season, and although he's been better since then, he entered Sunday's game with a 6.26 ERA. He was locked in from the start, throwing his first 10 pitches for strikes before finally missing the zone against Pedro Alvarez, the first hitter of the second. Scherzer got Alvarez anyway for his third strikeout of the day.

Scherzer had struck out five straight ? and 10 for the game ? when Rod Barajas homered with one out in the fifth to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Jhonny Peralta answered with a solo shot in the bottom half.

Neil Walker hit a 407-foot homer in the sixth, and it appeared the Tigers might waste Scherzer's terrific effort. His pitch count was creeping up, precluding a run at the big league record of 20 strikeouts for a nine-inning game, and Scherzer was actually on the hook for a loss when manager Jim Leyland offered him a congratulatory handshake after the top of the seventh.

But Prince Fielder led off the bottom half with a blooper to left that dropped between shortstop Clint Barmes and left fielder Nate McLouth. Barmes had a long way to run because the infield was shifted around to the right, and when the ball hit the ground, it bounced weirdly up off him into foul ground, enabling Fielder to reach second with a double.

Delmon Young followed with a tying single, and Peralta drew a walk one out later. A passed ball by Barajas allowed the runners to move up to second and third, and the Pirates brought the infield in. Avila's base hit up the middle foiled that strategy and made it 4-2.

Scherzer allowed four hits and a walk.

Detroit was without center fielder Austin Jackson (abdominal strain) and closer Jose Valverde (lower back strain), but the Tigers ended up taking two of three from Pittsburgh. Scherzer and Justin Verlander bookended the series with brilliant pitching performances. Verlander threw a one-hit shutout Friday night, striking out 12 and giving up only a ninth-inning single to Josh Harrison.

The Pirates struck out 17 times Sunday and 41 times in the series.

NOTES: Detroit's Brennan Boesch had his 12-game hitting streak snapped. ... Pittsburgh dropped to 19-9 when scoring at least two runs. ... The Tigers are off Monday. The Pirates return home and will send LHP Erik Bedard (2-5) to the mound against Johan Santana (1-2) of the New York Mets.

The attack comes one day ahead of a NATO summit in Chicago, where the coalition intends to spell out its role in Afghanistan after foreign combat troops leave by the end of 2014.

"The bomber blew himself up in a crowded market and it was powerful," said Sardar Mohammad Zazai, police chief of eastern Khost province.

He said the assailant was heading for a police checkpoint in the Ali Sher district along the border with Pakistan's "lawless tribal areas".

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed six children, one civilian adult and three policemen.

Eleven years into the NATO-led war against the Taliban, the Islamist group holds large sway in Afghanistan's restive south and east, where they enjoy enormous popular support.

Afghan security officials have said they expect this year's summer fighting season to be bloody as the third phase of a security handover from NATO to Afghan forces gets underway.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Scores of Christian youths in the Philippines chanted "Stop the Lady Gaga concerts" at a rally Friday calling for the pop diva's shows here to be canceled despite assurances from authorities that they won't allow nudity and lewd acts.

Sold-out crowds and angry protests followed Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" Asian tour. Fans younger than 18 were banned from the Seoul concerts over complaints her lyrics and costumes were too sexually provocative, and she was denied a concert permit in Indonesia by police under pressure from Islamic hard-liners.

About 70 members of a group called Biblemode Youth Philippines rallied in front of the Pasay City Hall in metropolitan Manila. They said they were offended by Lady Gaga's music and videos, in particular her song "Judas," which they say mocks Jesus Christ.

Lady Gaga has secured papers for two concerts Monday and Tuesday, but Pasay City Mayor Antonino Calixto said he told organizers to ensure that "they follow the rules and regulations stipulated in the concert permit earlier provided by the city government."

"Although we respect artistic and musical expressions, I won't allow anyone or any group to provide acts which may be questionable in a way at any venue under my jurisdiction," he said in a statement. "We reminded the producers of Lady Gaga's concert that the show and the event as a whole shall not exhibit any nudity or lewd conduct which may be offensive to morals and good customs."

Protest leader and former Philippine Congressman Benny Abante says his group plans to file a case against Lady Gaga and concert organizers if she sings "Judas" at her Manila gigs.

Organizers from Ovation Productions did not immediately provide details about the upcoming concerts, including whether Lady Gaga will perform "Judas."

Former Manila Mayor Jose Atienza said the singer and organizers can be punished for offending race or religion. Under the penal code in the conservative, majority Roman Catholic country, the penalty can range from six months to six years in prison, although no one has been convicted recently.

Atienza and a prominent lawyer, Romulo Macalintal, met earlier Friday with Calixto to press their concern about the concerts, which will be held at the newly constructed seaside Mall of Asia arena with a seating capacity of 20,000.

The Rev. Reyzel Cayanan from Biblemode Youth Philippines said he will lead another protest march and a candlelight vigil Saturday near the concert venue.

Maryland Residents Can't Go Home After Fire Due to Asbestos ...

Chevy Chase, Maryland ? After a devastating fire that ripped through an apartment building in Chevy Chase, MD, earlier in May, residents were told that they could not return to their homes not because of the extensive fire damage but for the asbestos found during the post-fire clean up.

Nearly 20 residences at the Round Hill Apartments were either fully destroyed or damaged by the fire. Fire officials now believe that the fire was intentionally set, but the motive or the person involved has yet been identified.

After the fire was contained and extinguished, officials let residents return to the homes to retrieve personal belongings. The apartment complex was considered unsafe for some inhabitants as it underwent restoration after the fire.

Late last week, officials informed residents, as many were packing up personal items, that parts of the complex were unsafe, not from the fire damage, as it would be expected, but from asbestos contamination.

Many of the residents were devastated to learn that they could not return to their homes because of the risk of asbestos exposure.

Though it is unclear from reports, but it is possible that the asbestos became a serious health threat to residents after the fire exposed and damaged building materials that contained asbestos. Most, if not all, public and private buildings built up until the latter part of the twentieth century contained products with asbestos.

As an incredibly versatile material, asbestos is a naturally-occurring mineral that had numerous manufacturing applications including usage in building, electrical and plumbing materials.

Naturally, asbestos does not pose an immediate health threat to people, but when the material is disturbed in any way, the resulting fibers become highly toxic. Linked to many deadly diseases, asbestos exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, heart or abdominal wall.

In most cases of mesothelioma or other asbestos exposure related diseases, the disturbed asbestos fibers become airborne and are more likely to become inhaled or ingested. Once asbestos particles are inhaled, they can become lodged in the lungs, resulting in considerable damage that may lead to mesothelioma, asbestosis or even lung cancer.

With Round Hill Apartments, it is unclear when residents will be able to return to their homes or how long it will take for the apartment complex to not only be fully decontaminated from the lingering asbestos but when the restoration from the fire will be completed.

Intel wants to have conflict-free processors by the end of 2013

Image

Intel had already promised that it would avoid using conflict minerals, and now it's giving itself a more concrete timetable for that to happen. It wants to have at least one processor that's proven completely conflict-free across four key minerals -- gold, tantalum, tin and tungsten -- by the end of 2013. Lest you think Intel's not taking swift enough action, it wants to reach the tantalum goal by the end of this year. The effort's part of a wider array of goals that should cut back on the energy use, power and water use by 2020. Sooner rather than later, though, you'll be buying a late-generation Haswell- or Broadwell-based PC knowing that the chip inside was made under nobler conditions.

Now that Jessica Simpson has given birth to a 9-pound, 13-oz. baby daughter, Maxwell Drew, her other new baby has her undivided attention:

A new $4 million deal with Weight Watchers.

"As soon as Jessica heals from the C-section, she is extremely determined to work out," a confidant says. "She wants to show the world and is excited to do it."

And is contractually obligated to do it.

Since announcing that she and her fiance Eric Johnson were expecting their first child, Jessica has been under scrutiny over her pregnancy weight gain.

The 5-foot-3 star, who admitted weighing 175 pounds when she posed nude and pregnant for the April issue of Elle, needs to do a serious slim-down.

A source familiar with the Weight Watchers negotiations says the stakes are high, as she's got to lose at least 50 pounds. LITERALLY no pain, no gain.

"She'll have to meet the weight-loss goals for the deal to go through," says the source, adding that the new mom will be under a lot of pressure.

"She hasn't chosen a trainer yet. In fact, she hasn't even thought about it. But if she wants this, she'll need to work out a good five times a week."

For four million bucks? She can deal.

PTO Director Compares 'Smartphone Wars' to Patent Battles of Old ...

The so-called ?smartphone wars? involving patent lawsuits are just part of the ?natural ebb and flow of technology development? and not a fundamental problem with patents or the patents system, the director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office told a congressional committee today.

David Kappos, testifying before a House Judiciary Committee, compared the global battle over the technology inside smartphones to the fights about James Watt?s steam engines and sewing machines.

?We?re seeing the same series of events play out,? Kappos said as part of a hearing on the implementation of the Leahy Smith America Invents Act, the broad reforms of the patent system signed into law eight months ago.

First comes the technology that is transformative, and then come innovators who make incremental improvements to the technology, Kappos said. Finally, the original innovators seek to enforce those positions.

?And you have a dust up like we?re having right now,? Kappos said. ?These things happen; they sort themselves out over time.?

Kappos also told legislators that it now takes about 16 months for new patent applications to reach a final resolution, down from the previous average of 34 months.

Arafat's moneyman targeted in corruption probe

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? The late Yasser Arafat's powerful moneyman is the target of the highest-profile Palestinian corruption probe to date, facing allegations he syphoned off millions of dollars in public funds, the chief investigator said Wednesday.

Anti-corruption campaigners lauded the case against the shadowy former aide, Mohammed Rashid, as a sign of the maturing of the Palestinian political system, although the probe also appeared to be tinged with political intrigue.

Rashid, who has in the past denied wrongdoing, made veiled threats on a website to disclose purported secrets about the rise to power of Arafat's successor, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. And Palestinian watchdogs, while praising growing government vigilance about corruption, expressed concern that such investigations are at times being used selectively to settle personal scores.

The tall, dark-haired Rashid left the Palestinian territories after Arafat's death in November 2004, and his current whereabouts were not immediately known. Rafik Natche, head of the Palestinian Anti-Corruption Commission, said Rashid holds business interests in Jordan, Egypt, Montenegro, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, and that the Palestinian Authority has asked all five countries to freeze his assets and extradite him.

An Iraqi citizen of Kurdish ancestry, Rashid befriended top PLO officials in the 1980s.

From the 1994 establishment of the Palestinian Authority, a self-rule government in parts of the West Bank and Gaza, to Arafat's death a decade later, Rashid was in charge of many of the Palestinian leader's financial dealings. The iconic Arafat was known for a frugal lifestyle, but needed large sums to buy loyalty and allowed corrupt practices by those in his inner circle.

It is not known why Arafat put Rashid, a former journalist without formal business training, in charge of most of his business affairs.

Rashid "came to the Palestinian revolution without a penny in his pocket and became a multimillionaire," Natche told The Associated Press. "Where did he bring his money from? Of course, this is the money of the Palestinian people."

Natche said Rashid is suspected of having taken millions of dollars out of the Palestinian Investment Fund and the PLO's treasury, as well as setting up fake companies in his name and in the names of relatives. "The money and the companies disappeared," Natche said, citing documents.

In comments posted Tuesday on the website Inlightpress, Rashid said he would not respond to the allegations now, but warned that Abbas "made a huge mistake and must suffer the consequences." He did not elaborate. The website, which is believed to be linked to Rashid, announced in a separate section that it would soon run a series of articles by Rashid about the circumstances of Abbas' rise to power.

After keeping a low profile for years, Rashid started drawing attention to himself with a series of interviews that the Arab satellite TV station al-Arabiya began broadcasting last week. Rashid told the station he was asked by Palestinian officials in 2008 to provide documents about the investment fund, and that he told them the documents were at the fund's office. He said he has not been contacted since then.

The first decade of the Palestinian Authority was marked by rampant corruption and official mismanagement. During those years, Rashid "ran a network of financial transactions outside the law and outside the budget," said Azmi Shuaibi, a leading anti-corruption campaigner in the West Bank.

In 2003, the international community, concerned about millions in foreign aid going to waste, asked Palestinian economist Salam Fayyad to supervise Palestinian Authority spending. Fayyad, now the West Bank-based prime minister, is credited with providing greater transparency. However, for years, little was done to go after those suspected of stealing public funds.

Two years ago, Abbas set up the Anti-Corruption Commission and a special court. So far, the commission has handled 85 cases, including those of two Cabinet ministers who were forced to resign, but the court has not yet handed down any verdicts, Natche said.

The commission filed charges of fraud, embezzlement and money-laundering against Rashid on April 30. On May 8, the court urged Rashid through an announcement in a local newspaper to surrender to Palestinian authorities, Natche said. Rashid will be tried in absentia if he cannot be brought to the Palestinian territories, he added.

Shuaibi praised stepped up efforts to go after government corruption, but expressed concern about the way targets for investigation are being chosen. He noted that Rashid is a longtime associate of former Gaza strongman Mohammed Dahlan, who had a falling-out with Abbas last year after seemingly challenging the president's leadership. The connection between Dahlan and Rashid created an impetus "to pursue Rashid as well," Shuaibi said.

"I think the priorities (for investigations) are being set on a personal basis," said Shuaibi. He said he told Abbas that "we have concerns that the issue is being handled in a way of settling personal scores." Shuaibi said Abbas told him all suspicions were being investigated.

Officials in Abbas' office declined comment. Natche said anyone can approach the commission with information about alleged corruption, but acknowledged that most of his leads come from government agencies.

Daoud Kuttab, a Palestinian commentator, said Arafat's continued popularity made it difficult for investigators for some years to launch a probe against Rashid. But enough time has passed since Arafat's death, Kuttab said, adding that "there is a strong public sentiment against corruption."

The Administrative State vs. the Social Insurance State | Bleeding ...

In Libertarianism: What Everyone Needs to Know, I examine the question of which country is the most libertarian. I argue briefly that while the United States has the highest percentage of self-identified libertarians and uses the most libertarian rhetoric, it is not the most libertarian country in terms of its actual policies. Switzerland, Australia, Canada, and some others are much more libertarian (especially classical liberal-libertarian) than the United States.

Here?s a brief excerpt from an earlier draft:

The Wall Street Journal and Heritage Foundation produce an annual Index of Economic Freedom. They rate countries for their respect for property rights, freedom from corruption, business freedom, labor freedom, monetary freedom, trade freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom, fiscal freedom, and government spending. Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Canada, Chile, Mauritius, and Ireland have higher scores than the United States.?The United States ranks only 10th overall.

This index may understate how anti-libertarian the United States is. After all, the index penalizes countries if their governments spend large amounts on social insurance. Yet classical liberals and neoclassical liberals are not in principle opposed to government social insurance. [That is, they will accept it under certain conditions.]

Thus, suppose we separate the idea of the administrative state?which tries to control, regulate, manipulate, and manage the economy?from the social insurance state?which provides tax-financed education, healthcare, or unemployment insurance. On the Index of Economic Freedom, many countries that rank lower than the US have far less extensive administrative states than the US. For instance, Denmark ranks much higher than the United States on property rights, freedom from corruption, business freedom, monetary freedom, trade freedom, investment freedom, and financial freedom. Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and many other countries beat the US on these measures as well. Thus, many other European countries might reasonably be considered more economically libertarian than the US.

The administrative state directly interferes with citizens? economic liberty. To expand the scope of the administrative state?s power just is to limit the scope of individual citizens? economic liberty*.

What about the social insurance state, especially one that works pretty well? If you regard all taxation as theft, then you?ll see the social insurance state as a direct assault on property rights. But, even then, the social insurance state does not, in itself, directly curtail most economic liberties. (Of course, if the government taxes almost all of your income away or sets a limit to how much you can own, then that will limit your effective economic liberty.)

We could imagine a political-economic regime in which there is a completely or largely unregulated free market but in which the government taxes people to provide social insurance and some other welfare benefits. On its face, this regime seem much congenial to classical liberalism than a regime that provides no welfare benefits, but which regulates most enterprises, sets prices, controls entry into markets, and imposes licensing rules.

?

*On economic liberty:

Libertarians claim that, as a matter of basic justice, people have the right to acquire, hold, use, give, and in many cases destroy personal property. They may decide what to eat, drink, and wear, and determine what kinds of entertainment and cultural experiences they will consume. They may acquire wealth for themselves or for others. They have the right to enter into a wide range of contracts for the exchange of goods and services. They may enter into and negotiate employment contracts (including wage rates, hours worked, working conditions, and so on) as they see fit. They may decide for themselves how to balance leisure and work. They may choose to join unions or not. They may manage their households as they see fit. They may create things for sale. They have the right to start, manage, and stop businesses, to sell franchises in such businesses, and to run such businesses for their own private ends in the way they regard as best. This includes the right to form certain kinds of joint ventures, including certain kinds of corporations and workers? cooperatives. People may own private productive property, such as factories or machinery, and develop property for productive purposes. They may acquire, lend, take risks with, and profit from capital and financial instruments. They have the right to determine their own long-term financial plans, including retirement saving and investments in certain forms of insurance. Libertarians even believe that people have the right to sell sexual services or their own body parts, such as kidneys.

Obama tackles LA Galaxy star David Beckham over age and underwear

David Beckham proved himself a good sport when US President Barack Obama jokingly tackled him about his age and his line of underwear.

Congratulating Beckham's team LA Galaxy on its Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup victory, Mr Obama could not resist the open goals presented to him as he welcomed the players to the White House.

With perfect comic timing, he spoke of the "young up and comer on the team - a guy named David Beckham".

And as the 37-year-old former England captain smiled gamely, he went on: "I have to say I gave David a hard time. I said half his team mates could be his kids.

"We're getting old, David, though you're holding up better than me."

The president then scored more laughter with a cheeky reference to Beckham's business pursuits.

"Last year, at the age of 35, David had his best year at MLS, leading the team with 15 assists," he said.

"He did it despite fracturing his spine halfway through the season, injuring his hamstring a week before the championship game. He is tough. In fact, it's a rare man who can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear. David Beckham is that man."

LA Galaxy celebrated their third MLS Cup championship last year, almost five years after Beckham joined the side on a bumper pay deal that saw him become easily the highest paid player in the country.

Earlier this year he signed a new two-year deal with the team before launching his Bodywear underwear range at high street store H&M.

Report: Thompson Out, Media Man Levinsohn In As Yahoo?s Interim CEO

YahoologoWe're still confirming the news with Yahoo but AllThingsD's Kara Swisher is reporting that as of tomorrow, Scott Thompson will be leaving his role as CEO of Yahoo, and getting replaced, on an interim basis, by Ross Levinsohn, currently the global media head. Thompson's position has been mired in controversy since news broke the other week that he had lied about his qualifications -- and that situation seemed to be going from bad to worse as the company failed to act on the news in any significant way -- and Thompson remained in control. Some may even find the method in which he is finally going unsatisfactory: the company will apparently cite "personal reasons" for his departure, according to AllThingsD.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: self-driving cars, solar parasols and the ultimate DIY Iron Man suit

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

Image

What seems more futuristic: flying cars or self-driving cars? They both sound a bit like science fiction, but they're both getting closer to becoming a reality. In the latest chapter of Google's efforts to develop a car that uses video cameras, radar sensors and lasers to navigate through traffic, the state of Nevada just granted Google the world's first license for a computer-controlled, driverless Toyota Prius. Meanwhile, this week we also checked in on the PAL-V (which stands for "Personal Air and Land Vehicle"), a two-seat hybrid car and gyroplane that runs on gas, biodiesel or bio-ethanol. In other transportation news, the Texas Central Railroad floated a plan to build a $10-billion bullet train that would run between Houston and Fort Worth, and Toyota officially unveiled its second-generation 2012 RAV4 EV, which features a Tesla powertrain.

We also saw green technology cropping up in unexpected places this week, like the $1-billion ghost town that will be built on virgin desert land in Lea County, New Mexico to test emerging green technologies. Construction on the ghost town is set to begin in late June. Milwaukee native Bryan Cera invented Glove One, a 3D-printed glove that doubles as a cell phone. And in Tokyo, participants heaved 100,000 LED lights into the Sumida River as part of the 2012 Tokyo Hotaru Festival. Although it certainly looked cool, that's a lot of LED bulbs to literally dump in the river, and it raises some questions about e-waste. GE found a more practical use for LEDs, unveiling a new LED light bulb to replace the 100-watt incandescent.
