The Reality Of The Global Messaging Market: It?s Really Freaking Fragmented

messaging app mapIt would be easy to assume that Facebook or Apple's iMessage are in a natural position to reach global dominance in smartphone messaging. But the reality is that the landscape looks very different and is very fragmented -- at least for now. There are plenty of apps, WhatsApp included, that have tens of millions of users or dominant marketshare in their home countries of Korea, Japan or China.

Helpful Tips To Improve Your Cosmetic Surgery Experience ...

Related eBooks

It is essential to prepare for your surgery by stocking your refrigerator with enough drinks and prepared meals to last a couple weeks after your procedure. Schedule time away from work because you will not be able to take on any physical activity for a month following your procedure. Read on to get some more tips.

Any cosmetic surgeon should have a good insurance policy for malpractice. You need to make sure you are covered on the chance that something happens during your procedure. Don?t use a surgeon who doesn?t have proper insurance. It?s not only illegal for doctors not to carry malpractice insurance, but doctors who don?t may be subject to high premiums because of past problems.

If you have the feeling that you want cosmetic surgery, do it when you are young. When you are older and you have made the choice to get plastic surgery you might not get better as fast as you would when you were younger. Most surgeons feel the results of cosmetic surgery last longer if is is performed at an earlier age.

Because you?ll arrive home in a very exhausted state, it?s a great idea to get a friend or relative to stay with you and help out over your first post-surgery night. Speak with your surgeon if there isn?t anyone to stay with you; he or she may know of a nurse who can come stay with you.

If you are considering any one of the new laser surgeries, make sure to ask your surgeon how many he has done in the past. Also, do not undergo laser surgeries unless performed by a doctor. Some laser treatment centers offer treatment, but do not have a physician on staff. Although these treatment centers exist, you should only use laser treatment centers with a physician on staff.

About a month before the procedure, there are some steps you will need to take. Any pain medication should be considered carefully. You should stop taking this kind of medication during the month before your surgery. Your skin will heal more slowly if you take pain medication because it thins the blood.

Being sure to get a lot of relaxation and rest is critical when recovering from a cosmetic operation. It is customary that you plan to take time off for a reasonable period and avoid any stressful physical activities for several weeks post-surgery. Remember all that you have learned from this article in order to have a good experience.

Canadian Pacific Railway to eliminate 4,500 jobs

(AP) ? Canadian Pacific Railway will eliminate some 4,500 employee and contractor positions by 2016, the new chief executive of Canada's second largest railway announced Tuesday.

Chief executive Hunter Harrison said they have already made progress and expect 1,700 positions to be eliminated by year end.

CP's total workforce is 19,500, which includes employees and contractors. The Calgary, Alberta-based company said the reductions will be achieved through job cuts, attrition and fewer contractors as part of its restructuring plan. Harrison said at the company's annual investor conference in New York that the railway is "fortunate" to have a high attrition rate of eight to nine percent, given its older workforce.

Harrison is an American-born retired CEO of Canadian National Railway and is credited with turning the Montreal-based company into the most efficient major railway in North America.

Earlier this year, former CP chief executive Fred Green announced his departure, ending a months-long battle that pitted New York activist investor Bill Ackman against the board of directors. The railroad has since elected a new board and named Harrison CEO.

Harrison said he will relocate CP's corporate headquarters in downtown Calgary to a new office space at a CP-owned yard. CP will also explore options including the potential to sell surplus real estate, and the Delaware and Hudson line in the U.S. Northeast.

"We have only just started this journey to being a more competitive railway. We will continue to drive our service offering while focusing on taking unproductive costs out of the business," Harrison said in a statement.

Earlier Tuesday, CP said it is looking into the possibility of selling 660 miles (1,062 kilometers) of track in South Dakota and three surrounding states. CP in 2007 bought 2,500 miles (4,023 kilometers) of track and equipment from South Dakota-based DM&E and its subsidiaries for $1.5 billion. CP said it was "inviting expressions of interest."

Canadian Pacific Railway moves $50 billion worth of freight each year, including more than half of Canada's potash, wheat and coal.

Dick Cheney working on book about heart treatment

NEW YORK (AP) ? Former Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the world's most prominent heart patients, is working on a book about his many battles with coronary disease and the revolutionary changes in treatment that helped keep him alive.

The 71-year-old Cheney is collaborating with his cardiologist, Dr. Jonathan Reiner, and with his daughter, Liz Cheney. Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, announced Monday that the book is scheduled for next fall. It is currently untitled.

"It explains and talks about all the developments in cardiology by going through my own case," the former vice president said Monday during a brief telephone interview. "I'm alive today because of the tremendous advances that have been made."

Financial terms were not disclosed, although a "portion of the authors' net proceeds from the book will be donated to charity," according to Scribner. Cheney was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose clients also include President Obama and former President George W. Bush.

Cheney and his daughter also worked together on his memoir "In My Time," published in 2011 by the conservative Simon & Schuster imprint Threshold Editions. Cheney said the new book will be completely "non-political." Authors at Scribner range from Stephen King, a longtime liberal, to former first lady Laura Bush.

Cheney, who received a heart transplant in March, said that the idea for the book came from Reiner after they appeared together at the Cleveland Clinic for a conference on heart treatment. As Cheney explained, the clinic wanted him to speak because in his case "They've done everything they can to a patient."

As he wrote in "In My Time," Cheney was just 37 and running for Congress when he had his first heart attack, in 1978. Over the next 30 years, he had four more heart attacks, including one soon after Election Day in 2000 that required a stent to be inserted. In 2010, a year after he and President Bush left office, he had a battery-powered device installed to help his heart pump blood.

Cheney noted Monday that the procedures he had undergone were crucial steps ahead from the days when he was simply advised to quit smoking.

The former Vice President said that his current condition was "nothing short of a miracle." Two years ago, he was in "end-state heart failure." Now, "I'm better than I've been in years," well enough to indulge his beloved pastime of fly fishing.

"I spent a lot of time on the river this summer," he said, "and enjoying the finer things in life."

Turning transparency into action ? Business Management Daily ...

Most CEOs say they want transparency. Mark Leslie means it.

Leslie ran two firms before becoming chairman and CEO of Veritas Soft??ware in 1990. He knew from experience that when senior executives make deci??sions based on shared information with their employees, it decreases office politics and helps everyone buy into the company?s strategy.

At Veritas, he hosted weekly em??ployee gatherings where he?d cover all relevant news and information about the company. As Veritas grew, he initiated monthly meetings for all global man?agers. Leslie and his executive team updated the managers on earnings projections and other measures.

By revealing as much information as he could, he sought to stifle the rumor mill and minimize the need for internal secrecy. He also figured he?d build good will by leveling with everyone and unclogging communication channels.

Leslie, 66, acknowledges that trust can backfire. Putting your faith in em??ployees can occasionally lead to betrayal, but Leslie concludes that?s a small price to pay when striving to build lasting relationships based on honesty.

A CEO who shares information turns everyone into entrepreneurs. Support personnel are more apt to take risks.

Leslie cautions that if employees suspect a CEO is faking it, trust can collapse. He champions authentic leadership where you promote organizational values that truly reflect your character and belief system.

Genuineness and information sharing paid off for Leslie. In his 11-year run as CEO, Veritas (now known as Symantec Corp.) grew from 12 to 6,000 employees. Its annual revenue soared from $95,000 to $1.5 billion.

Better economy, storm delays lift US auto sales

DETROIT (AP) ? A better economy and havoc from Superstorm Sandy kept auto sales brisk in November.

Signs of a healthier U.S. economy and purchases postponed by Sandy pushed up sales for major automakers last month. Chrysler, Nissan and Hyundai reported strong demand on everything from small SUVs to sedans on Monday.

Americans are more confident about the economy than they've been in a while: Home values are rising, hiring is up and interest rates remain low. And that means people are willing to make big purchases.

Superstorm Sandy, which hit at the end of October, forced buyers in the Northeast to postpone purchases until November. Also, people whose cars were damaged by the storm are starting to replace them. And because the average age of a vehicle on U.S. roads is approaching 11 years, people are being forced to make costly repairs or buy a new car or truck.

"Everything is kind of moving along almost in concert now," says Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting for LMC Automotive, a Detroit-area industry consulting firm.

November sales, when calculated on an annual basis, are likely to be 15 million or more, the highest rate since March of 2008, according to LMC. That's above the 14.3 million annual rate so far this year, even though November is normally a lackluster month due to cold weather and holiday anticipation.

If sales end up at 15 million for the year, it would be a vast improvement over the 10.4 million during the recession in 2009. Sales would still fall short of the recent peak of around 17 million in 2005.

Chrysler's U.S. sales rose 14 percent last month from a year earlier, the company said Monday. Hyundai sales rose 8 percent from November of 2011, and Nissan sales were up 13 percent.

Chrysler results were led by the Dodge brand, which saw sales rise 32 percent. The company says it sold 123,000 vehicles. Dodge Journey crossover SUV sales rose 77 percent.

South Korea's Hyundai reported sales of just over 53,000 for the month, led by the Sonata midsize car and the Elantra compact. Nissan said it sold more than 96,000 vehicles for the month, with a 41 percent increase at the Infiniti luxury brand.

Foreign-based brands like Hyundai should see the biggest sales increases in November due to big discounts, says Jesse Toprak, senior analyst for automotive pricing site TrueCar.com. TrueCar estimates that Hyundai and Kia, which were admonished by the U.S. government in late October for overstating gas mileage, increased incentive spending by nearly 30 percent. Nissan spending was up 45 percent, while Toyota spending rose 9 percent from a year earlier.

Most analysts say they are seeing little sales impact from the "fiscal cliff" negotiations between Congress and the White House. The term refers to sharp government spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to start Jan. 1 unless an agreement is reached to cut the budget deficit. Economists say that those measures, if implemented, could push the U.S. economy back into a recession.

Schuster says the fiscal cliff and a possible recession are among the risks that could derail the auto sales recovery next year.
