Don't be fooled! Great camera deals are harder to spot on Black Friday

While there are plenty of deals and discounts to be had on TVs, phones, laptops and other tech products, camera-wise, there aren't a lot of reasons to wait in line until midnight after Thanksgiving dinner. That's because the year's best cameras ? many of which are rounded up here ? simply aren't subject to fire-sale pricing.

Lakers Beat Nets 95-90, Win Mike D'Antoni's Debut

LOS ANGELES ? Although Mike D'Antoni still can't jump, pivot or move on his surgically replaced knee with his usual enthusiasm, he felt plenty strong enough to start work with the Los Angeles Lakers.

D'Antoni also knows it's usually quite comfortable to be Kobe Bryant's coach.

Bryant scored six of his 25 points in the final two minutes, and the Lakers hung on for a 95-90 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night in D'Antoni's sideline debut.

Although D'Antoni is still unsteady after knee surgery earlier this month, he coached Los Angeles to a narrow victory that snapped Brooklyn's five-game winning streak. Eight months after leaving the New York Knicks, he seemed thrilled to be in his rightful place on an NBA bench ? and to watch his talented new team do its thing.

"With this team, there's no reason not to win every game," D'Antoni said. "That's our goal. It's not, `Let's get two out of three.' We can win every game we play. ... I feel like we're the best team in the league. We've got the most talent, so they can do what they want. We've just got to keep perfecting things."

D'Antoni clearly isn't at full strength: He hobbled slowly on the sideline on the rare occasions he left his chair during play in the first half. He moved around with more vigor after halftime, protesting foul calls with his usual theatrical vehemence despite a slight limp in his step.

"I was a little peg-legged, but it was good," D'Antoni said with a laugh. "Adrenalin is a great thing. I'm good, (but) jumping is a thing of the past."

Dwight Howard had 23 points and 15 rebounds despite a horrific 7-for-19 performance at the free-throw line for the Lakers, who have won five of six and moved above .500 since firing Mike Brown. Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace scored 17 points apiece. Gasol contributed 11 rebounds and seven assists as the Lakers wrapped up a tumultuous six-game homestand that began with Brown's unexpected firing 11 days ago.

"We're definitely playing with better flow," Gasol said. "We're playing with more confidence, looser out there."

The Lakers went 4-1 under interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff, but D'Antoni finally took over the bench nine days after he was hired. Los Angeles largely couldn't play at his favored tempo, but D'Antoni quickly learned the benefits of coaching Bryant, who took over in the final minutes.

Bryant has played for D'Antoni on various U.S. national teams.

"It's the same as it's always been," Bryant said. "He's always very calm, but he still has an undertone edge to him. He's the same D'Antoni. ... We're just getting more in sync with each other. For the most part, we're doing a pretty good job taking care of the ball."

Brook Lopez scored 23 points and Deron Williams had 22 for the Nets, who missed five of their last six shots in their ninth consecutive loss to the Lakers.

"It was definitely frustrating," Williams said. "We were right there and we battled the whole game. We had control of the game at one point, but we didn't make shots down the stretch. We had plenty of chances to tie it. We were getting the stops we needed, and put them on the free throw line a couple of times, but we just didn't make enough plays down the stretch and we didn't convert."

After taking a narrow lead through three quarters, the Lakers missed their first seven shots in the fourth and fell behind mostly due to their All-Star center's incompetence at the line. Brooklyn deliberately fouled Howard in the fourth quarter, when he went 3 for 10.

Los Angeles still took the lead on Gasol's free throw with 2:37 to play, and Bryant hit a running hook shot after Joe Johnson airballed a jumper moments later. Johnson cut the lead to one point on a fast-break layup with 36 seconds left, but Bryant hit four free throws in the final 17.1 seconds while Williams missed a potential tying 3-pointer with 4 seconds left.

Johnson scored 14 points for the Nets, who finish their three-game California road trip at Golden State on Wednesday night.

"I thought Deron did a great job of quarterbacking the team and getting it to our pace," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "We wish we could have had a few more shots fall in the fourth quarter, but our team laid it all out on the floor. They showed a lot of heart, something that we didn't see early in the season ? especially in a road game at Miami."

NOTES: The Nets haven't won six straight games or been more than five games over .500 since 2006. .. Before the game, D'Antoni said Steve Blake and Steve Nash will miss at least four more games, which means they won't play on the Lakers' three-game road trip over the next four days starting in Sacramento on Wednesday night. The Lakers' next home game is against Indiana on Nov. 27. ... The Lakers have won their last five road meetings with the Nets, last losing in New Jersey on March 17, 2006. They'll visit Barclays Center on Feb. 5.

Picking No-Fuss Systems For Reducing Your Heartburn | EzinePR

Your heartburn has been kicking in recently. It?s been an on and off thing along for most you have ever had, and you?ll or may not have already taken the trip to the pharmacy to post some antacid tablets. Regardless of how much relief you receive temporarily, you?d rather just be capable of avoid having any acid reflux or heartburn to start with.

Is it your daily diet? Do you need to start exercising more or sleep in an incline? Have you been getting this heartburn or acid reflux because of a more dangerous health issue that you aren?t mindful of? I really can?t inform you for sure, but I can share along some of the most effective to deal with heartburn or acid reflux. From natural treatments to simple adjustments to diet or lifestyle, I?ve learned enough about it all during my own experiences to deliver some insights that one could employ to get rid of your acid reflux and heartburn forever.

Exactly What Causes Reflux and Heartburn? Acid reflux includes stomach acids, drink and food being regurgitated from your stomach or more into your esophagus, sometimes even your throat in severe cases. A little-known fact about it common ailment is that it is very commonly the effect of a lack of acids with your stomach, not an excessive amount.

Without enough hydrochloric acid with your stomach, things that you eat can?t be digested properly. These foods and drinks sit inside your stomach dissolving very slowly, unable to continue to the subsequent stage of digestion. This slow sort of digestion that takes place when your stomach is tight on acid leads to a ton of gas build-up. This gas travels upwards, bringing along with it food, drink, and also small amounts of your stomach acid.

Interestingly enough, ?antacids? and most other prescription medications for acid reflux disorder or heartburn weaken or dilute the acidity within your stomach. You might not feel any pain for a while, but this is actually just making the problem worse after a while. If you ask me, I would suggest that you simply avoid letting a medical expert give you anything for your heartburn or acid reflux woes if you don?t have tried absolutely everything else I am going to go over.

What to Do

Diet

Your diet is the first thing that you should look at. Avoid overly spicy or salty foods when possible. Choose lean cuts of meat and attempt to avoid using pepper or any seasoning that you find to bring about your reflux. Really, the easiest method to develop a healthy, anti-heartburn diet yourself is to get to learn your own body and discover what foods apparently trigger it. A good way to do this is to hold a log of what you take in and note each and every time you feel your heartburn begin working.

Eating late at night or setting up flat after consume is another easy way to stir up some painful, burning heartburn. Do everything you?ll be able to to avoid this.

Improving Digestion

As earlier mentioned, your digestive system is what primarily causes the sentiments of heartburn. A natural remedy generally known as Stops Acid Reflux uses apple cider vinegar treatment mixed with other natural ingredients to add a certain type of acidity for a stomach. As a matter of fact, this really is the only remedy for acid reflux disorder out there that will say it?ll are employed in just one minute. It truly boggles my mind when I consider how relatively unknown the product is when compared to other stuff available that doesn?t work half too.

This remedy is the best answer for individuals that need the pain to stop now, however it is a very good idea to also make a few changes for your daily habits. Not only will it make the acid reflux roll around less often, you?ll simply feel great and look better.

Exercise

You should consider going out to get a walk each morning or afternoon. Taking a 30 minute walk after eating and enjoying dinner usually helps somewhat if you will get nighttime heartburn or acid reflux, and merely about any exercise in any way will improve your body?s ability to keep heartburn from happening alone.

Changes to Lifestyle

Messing the health by smoking cigarettes is not something which you should be surprised about, plus it may very well be the smoking to blame again if you?re having heartburn or acid reflux that you are able to?t remove. Some brands of any nicotine products will likely cause much more serious heartburn, to consider changing brands if you are not planning to quit or decrease.

It may take you some time to get your health totally manageable, heartburn and acid reflux included, but employing a natural remedy much like the one mentioned above to handle the pain is exponentially smarter than adding fuel on the flames with unhealthy prescription drugs. This is the best little advice that I can give anyone dealing with this terrible problem.

Iowa Straw Poll May Cease to Be Useless, Exist in 2016

In a bucking of primary-season tradition that might just fend off the Michele Bachmann of 2016, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad is now floating the idea of killing the Ames Straw Poll. Since 1979, a sliver of Iowans have voted for their favorite GOP candidate the summer before the presidential caucuses, and it remains to be seen, somehow, as an important early measure of the candidates' organizing strength and appeal to voters. The tradition raises a lot of money for the party, and brings attention to the state. It also brings a lot of undue attention to the likes of past winners like Pat Robertson. In 2011, of course, Iowans picked Michele Bachmann, who proved to be not exactly ready for primetime, but whose victory forced the more mainstream Tim Pawlenty out of the race. "I think the straw poll has outlived its usefulness," Branstad told The Wall Street Journal's Neil King Jr. "It has been a great fundraiser for the party but I think its days are over." Only two pre-primary straw-poll winners have gone on to win the Republican nomination: George W. Bush and Bob Dole (who tied for the "win").

RELATED: GOP Primary: Where Are They Now?

Republicans are looking for someone to blame for the 2012 election, and there are a few candidates: awkward Mitt Romney, Obama-hugger Chris Christie, campaign consultants, and their crazy voters. The blame-our-crazy-voters theory has mostly just been hinted at, with pundits talking about the rightward pressure from Fox News-watching "gullible grass-roots activists," or outgoing Rep. Steve LaTourette saying they'd been brainwashed by hard-right special interest groups to pick bad candidates. But voterphobia is especially obvious in Branstad's threat to take away their straw poll. States have been competing to move their primaries earlier in the year in order to have a bigger say in the election. The straw poll isn't an official result, but it forces candidates to compete heavily in Iowa very early. But it sounds like Branstad, who cited Bachmann's rise as a reason to spike the straw poll, thinks the social conservatives in Iowa might have too much say. Not that it's stopping the Marco Rubios of the world from stopping by.?

Step forward in regenerating and repairing damaged nerve cells

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? A team of IRCM researchers, led by Dr. Fr?d?ric Charron, recently uncovered a nerve cell's internal clock, used during embryonic development. The discovery was made in collaboration with Dr. Alyson Fournier's laboratory at the Montreal Neurological Institute. Published November 21 in the scientific journal Neuron, this breakthrough could lead to the development of new tools to repair and regenerate nerve cells following injuries to the central nervous system.

Researchers in Dr. Charron's laboratory study neurons, which are the nerve cells that make up the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). They want to better understand how neurons navigate through the developing embryo to arrive at their correct destination.

"To properly form neural circuits, developing axons (long extensions of neurons that form nerves) follow external signals to reach the right targets," says Dr. Fr?d?ric Charron, Director of the Molecular Biology of Neural Development research unit at the IRCM. "We discovered that nerve cells also have an internal clock, which changes their response to external signals as they develop over time."

For this research project, IRCM scientists focused on the Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) protein, which gives cells important information for the embryo to develop properly and plays a critical role in the development of the central nervous system.

"It is known that axons follow the Shh signal during their development," explains Dr. Patricia Yam, research associate in Dr. Charron's laboratory and first author of the study. "However, axons change their behaviour once they reach this protein, and this has been a mystery for the scientific community. We found that a nerve cell's internal clock switches its response to external signals when it reaches the Shh protein, at which time it becomes repelled by the Shh signal rather than following it."

"Our findings therefore showed that more than one system is involved in directing axon pathfinding during development," adds Dr. Yam. "Not only do nerve cells respond to external signals, but they also have an internal control system. This discovery is important because it offers new possibilities for developing techniques to regenerate and repair damaged nerve cells. Along with trying to modify external factors, we can now also consider modifying elements inside a cell in order to change its behaviour."

Injuries to the central nervous system affect thousands of Canadians every year, and can lead to lifelong disabilities. Most often caused by an accident, stroke or disease, these injuries are very difficult to repair. New tools are therefore required to repair damage to the central nervous system, including techniques that could potentially regenerate nerve cells.

"The Canadian Institutes of Health Research is delighted to support research aimed at improving the lives of individuals with damage to the brain or spinal cord," says Dr. Anthony Phillips, Scientific Director of CIHR's Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction. ''Nerve cell repair and regeneration remains an important health challenge, and we believe that Dr. Charron's research findings will contribute to the solution."

Nanomedicine breakthrough could improve chemotherapy for childhood cancer

ScienceDaily (Nov. 20, 2012) ? In a world-first, researchers from the Australian Centre for Nanomedicine at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney have developed a nanoparticle that could improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy for neuroblastoma by a factor of five.

Neuroblastoma is an aggressive childhood cancer that often leaves survivors with lingering health problems due to the high doses of chemotherapy drugs required for treatment. Anything that can potentially reduce these doses is considered an important development.

The UNSW researchers developed a non-toxic nanoparticle that can deliver and release nitric oxide (NO) to specific cancer cells in the body. The findings of their in vitro experiments have been published in the journal Chemical Communications.

"When we injected the chemo drug into the neuroblastoma cells that had been pre-treated with our new nitric oxide nanoparticle we needed only one-fifth the dose," says co-author Dr Cyrille Boyer from the School of Chemical Engineering at UNSW.

"By increasing the effectiveness of these chemotherapy drugs by a factor of five, we could significantly decrease the detrimental side-effects to healthy cells and surrounding tissue."

This synergistic effect between nitric oxide and chemotherapy drugs had previously been reported in other cancer cell lines, but the delivery compounds were potentially toxic and had very poor stability, or shelf life.

In contrast, the UNSW-developed nanoparticle is non-toxic and has a shelf life that has been extended from two days to more than two weeks: "Drug storage is critical and this is a substantial improvement over previous nitric oxide-carrier compounds," says Boyer.

Nitric Oxide is an important cellular signalling molecule involved in many physical and mental processes, and deficiencies have been associated with heightened susceptibility to cancer, liver fibrosis, diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses and neurodegenerative diseases.

"If we can restore nitric oxide with these nanoparticles this could have implications for all the illnesses associated with NO deficiencies, including diabetes and neurodegenerative," he says.

The key medical challenge, says Boyer, has been figuring out a way to deliver appropriate doses to specific sites within the body, without provoking an adverse reaction. The Australian Centre for Nanomedicine -- which crosses science, engineering and medicine -- is investigating multi-disciplinary solutions.

Boyer says that while biologists have experimented with nitric oxide, mixing it with cancer cells and observing the reactions, "no one has tried to develop a platform to specifically deliver nitric oxide -- that is, where you want it, when you want it."

The next step is to test the nanoparticle on other cell lines, such as lung and colon cancer cells, and to proceed to in vivo tests. The team also included researchers from the Children's Cancer Institute Australia based at UNSW's Lowy Cancer Research Centre.

WOW! Women On Writing Blog: Straying From the Script: Surprises ...

I am usually a planner--definitely in my everyday life. If I didn't plan, I wouldn't get half of the things done that I do in a day or a week. When I write, I'm a half-planner/half-pantser--I usually have notes and an outline, but I don't always follow them 100 percent because as I'm in the middle of? a project (novel, article, blog post), my brain thinks of better things to say than my notes do. When it comes to speaking engagements, I'm a planner-I actually prefer to use Power Point presentations, so I can really stick to my "plan" and remember to say everything I wanted to say.

But recently, I was invited to speak in Hannibal, MO at the Missouri Association for Family & Community Education Conference about being a children's author. The very nice lady who hired me said that she wanted me to talk about what it was like to write for children. I assumed (as we know this is something you SHOULD NOT DO) this was because the people in the audience were interested in writing for children. So, I prepared my Power Point presentation, filled it with tips for people who are starting out writing for children, packed up my just released book: a middle-grade novel Finding My Place, and drove for almost two hours to the talk.

When I started my speech, I asked the audience how many people wanted to write for children--NO ONE (out of about 50 or so people) raised their hand! When I asked how many people liked to write or wrote on a regular basis, one person raised her hand.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that I was not going to be able to deliver my planned Power Point presentation and that I was going to have to change things up a bit for my 35-minute talk, or these ladies were going to be bored to tears. So, I started talking about my life, my book, researching less than a week after the 9/11 attacks, why I write, what to do if you are at all interested, and how everyone has a story. It turned out fine. I only put one person to sleep, and there were even questions when I was finished.

Best of all--I sold over 20 books and had several nice comments, including one woman who didn't want her $1.00 change back and said, "I want you to keep that--not your publisher." (Part of my talk was about how little royalties we make on a book. . .) I had to stray from my script for this presentation, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well it all turned out.

The same thing has happened to me before--while working on a contemporary middle-grade mystery novel, while leading a writing workshop for children, while creating notes for online classes. Sometimes, you have to go with the flow, with what your audience wants, with where your characters are taking you.

I will never stop planning--it's not in my nature, and I like to have a plan. I feel better. But I will look for those opportunities to stray from the script and hope that pleasant surprises always await.? How about you?
