VA Maryland Health Care System Offers Tips to Beat the Holiday ...

To avoid or minimize holiday blues, Dr. Lorie Morris from the VA Maryland Health Care Systems Clinical Center recommends that those prone to depression have a safety plan in place. Anyone who is alone or lonely, who is battling urges to drink or use substances, is being offered drinks or drugs, is coping with pushy, annoying or aggressive people, or who is feeling stressed about money, family, and the future needs a safety plan. The safety plan can include setting time limits on social activities such as agreeing to spend 1-2 hours at a gathering. Morris recommends handling problems early before they escalate. Uncomfortable in social situations? Embrace other roles such as kitchen clean up, refilling glasses, passing out desserts to alleviate the exhaustion of keeping up holiday chatter.
