If that all sounds rather humdrum, Samsung is attempting to spice up Windows 8 by bundling custom apps, some of which you might remember from its various Android products. Sammy's various "Hubs" (Music, Video, Media and Social) are all present and accounted for, as is the AllShare app, which uses DLNA to share content across different devices. ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? There are more than 400,000 species of beetles and only two species of the tuatara, a reptile cousin of snakes and lizards that lives in New Zealand. Crocodiles and alligators, while nearly 250 million years old, have diversified into only 23 species. Why evolution has produced "winners" -- including mammals and many species of birds and fish -- and "losers" is a major question in evolutionary biology.

Scientists have often posited that because some animal and plant lineages are much older than others, they have had more time to produce new species (the dearth of crocodiles notwithstanding). This idea -- that time is an important predictor of species number -- underlies many theoretical models used by biologists. However, it fails to explain species numbers across all multi-cellular life on the planet, a team of life scientists reports Aug. 28 in the online journal PLoS Biology, a publication of the Public Library of Science.

"We found no evidence of that," said Michael Alfaro, a UCLA associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and senior author of the new study. "When we look across the tree of life, the age of the group tells us almost nothing about how many species we would expect to find. In most groups, it tells us nothing."

Another idea, that some groups are innately better or worse at producing species, similarly fails to explain differences in species number among all of the major living lineages of plants and animals, the life scientists found.

"We know that some groups, like flowering plants or cichlid fishes, have been exceptionally good at producing species during certain periods of their evolutionary history," Alfaro said. "However, when we look at the ages of all of the major groups of plants and animals, these differences in speciation rate are not sufficient to explain the differences in species number that exist in extant groups."

Alfaro and his colleagues studied 1,397 major groups of multi-cellular eukaryotes -- including animals, plants and fungi -- that account for 1.2 million species. Working as "evolutionary detectives," they were able to see whether the groups that split the earliest tended to have the most species. They assigned a "species richness score" to these 1,397 groups, using novel statistical and computational methods they developed.

If age does not explain species diversity, an alternative idea is that a lineage will produce species up until the point that it fills an "adaptive zone" that allows a maximum number of species, Alfaro said. In other words, a lineage of bats, whales or penguins has a maximum capacity that is determined by habitat requirements and competitors.

When an adaptive zone is first colonized, the growth of new species will be rapid, up until that limit has been reached. Once a zone is full, this speciation rate will level off. New species will not emerge until one of two events occurs: First, an existing species may go extinct, in which case it may be replaced. Second, a species within the adaptive zone may evolve a new trait -- sharp teeth, wings, chemical defenses or camouflage, for example -- that confers a significant ecological advantage and takes it into a new adaptive zone, creating opportunities for new species to emerge,Alfaro said.

"Adaptive zones are an old idea in evolutionary biology, but there is little understanding of whether speciation rates or adaptive zones are more important in explaining species richness across the tree of life," Alfaro said. "If adaptive zones control biodiversity at the broadest scales, then the rate of species growth will be a good explanation of species richness only right after a lineage has entered into a new adaptive zone. Once the adaptive zone has filled up, then, no matter how much time goes by, the number of species will not change much."

Thus, these adaptive zones, which Alfaro also calls "ecological limits," serve to restrict the number of new species that can emerge.

"Most of the groups that we studied have hit their limits," he said. "Ecological limits can explain the data we see. What's really driving things is how many times lineages evolve new innovations that move them into new adaptive zones.

"The ultimate goal in our field is to have a reconstruction of the entire evolutionary history of all species on the planet," Alfaro added. "Here we provide a piece of the puzzle. Our study sheds light on the causal factors of biodiversity across the tree of life."

Daniel Rabosky, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is the lead author of the study, and Graham Slater, a National Science Foundation-funded UCLA postdoctoral scholar in ecology and evolutionary biology, is a co-author.

The research is funded by the National Science Foundation and by the University of California's Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science.

In a 2009 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Alfaro and his colleagues reported that mammals and many species of birds and fish are among evolution's "winners," while crocodiles, alligators and a reptile cousin of snakes and lizards known as the tuatara are among the "losers." That study also showed that new species emerge nearly as often as they die off.

It seems only fitting that the final two days of swimming this season at the Virden Pool be hot days and according to the Weather Channel they will be. Today and tomorrow are expected to be sunny and hot so be sure to take advantage of them by going swimming.

Tomorrow, Wednesday August 28th is the day to register for Fall programs offered by Prairie West Recreation. Registration takes place from 5pm-8pm at Tundra Oil and Gas Place.

If you like the photos on this site you may have noticed that the Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze pictures are missing from the photo slider on the Home Page.

These photos, as well as photos from the High School Rodeo and the Cutting Edge Skating School have been moved to albums under the Photo heading.

Photos are rotated (moved to other albums) regularly to make way for new events and with Fall coming it seems appropriate to make some space for new photos.

The photos from the Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze are now in their own album. This album contains pictures from the kickoff barbeque in Victoria Park, the Wild West Daze events that occurred downtown, the Parade and Saturday?s Rodeo events that took place at the Agricultural Grounds and indoors at Tundra Oil and Gas Place.

The High School Rodeo is in the album called Virden Rodeo and Agricultural Events.

The Cutting Edge Skating School photos are in the album called Skate Virden Figure Skating. While Cutting Edge Skating School is technically a separate school run by Patty Hole and not part of Skate Virden it is an important piece of the figure skating instruction that takes place in Virden each year.

After typing Virden Recreation Centre for most of a year it is a nice change to be able to type Tundra Oil and Gas Place.
It has also resulted in having to change the name for our facility on several of the pages on this website.

Hollande's appeal to the opposition underscores a belief in many diplomatic circles that a credible alternative to Assad's regime must take shape first in order to expedite the Syrian leader's exit - an outcome that France, the U.S. and many other Western powers have sought for months.

Syria's opposition remains badly fragmented and it is far from clear whether such a provisional government could be formed anytime soon. But Hollande's statement, believed to be the first of its kind, appeared aimed to give an impetus to the creation of such a government in part because there is no international mandate for stronger action.

Many Western nations and Arab countries have called for Assad to leave power, but none has gone so far as to formally recognize the opposition.

"France asks the Syrian opposition to form a provisional government - inclusive and representative - that can become the legitimate representative of the new Syria," Hollande said in a speech to France's corps of ambassadors.

"We are including our Arab partners to accelerate this step," he said at the presidential palace, without elaborating. "France will recognize the provisional government of Syria once it is formed."

In Washington, American officials said the French call for a Syrian provisional government wasn't coordinated with anyone else, and that the U.S. wouldn't echo the statement anytime soon. The officials called it premature to speak about a provisional government when Syria's fractured opposition hasn't even agreed yet on a transition plan. The U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Hollande has come under criticism over his Syria policy from France's conservative opposition ? notably by his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy ? who this month said France should take action as it did in the NATO-led campaign in Libya that helped oust Moammar Gadhafi. Sarkozy was French president during the first 14 months of the Syrian conflict and he did not call for military action without an international mandate either.

The conflict in Syria, which began as popular protests in March 2011 and has evolved into a civil war, is estimated by activists to have killed more than 20,000 people. Over the weekend, evidence mounted of mass killings by government forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya.

Echoing similar concerns expressed recently by President Barack Obama, Hollande said France remains "very vigilant ... to prevent the use of chemical weapons by the (Assad) regime."

Hollande said that any use of chemical weapons to repress Syria's people "would provide a legitimate reason for direct intervention by the international community."

But France sees no clear indication that Assad's forces are taking any steps to employ chemical weapons, a French official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

French officials noted a push for international military action in Syria could prove to be a dilemma for Obama, who is vastly popular in France and up for re-election this fall, because they feel that the U.S. public has little appetite for a new intervention in the Middle East after wars in Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan.

France also has taken steps to support the creation of "free zones" for the protection of displaced people inside Syria - notably along the lines of a buffer zone idea floated by Turkey, Hollande said.

Russia and China have blocked U.N. sanctions against Syria by using their vetoes on the U.N. Security Council. Hollande took issue with that, saying Moscow's and Beijing's "attitude weakens our ability to carry out the mandate conferred on us by the U.N. charter."

Syria's opposition has been plagued by divisions and infighting since the start of the uprising last year, and forming a transitional government is fraught with difficulties.

Abdelbaset Sieda, the leader of main umbrella opposition group the Syrian National Council, said recently the group was planning and consulting for a transitional government. But several other opposition groups are known to be making similar plans, including a new opposition alliance headed by veteran opposition figure Haitham Maleh.

Major League Gaming Finally Recognizes Mobile With N.O.V.A. 3 ...

Major League Gaming, typically the realm of console and PC gaming, is making a foray into mobile gaming competitions with N.O.V.A. 3.

:Major League Gaming is primarily known for providing a competitive gaming league for PC and console titles, where the traditional core gamer set enjoys to play at high levels of competition. However, mobile gaming has not really been a part of this community, until very recently, as Gameloft has partnered with MLG for sponsored competitions in two of their recent first-person shooters: N.O.V.A. 3 AND Modern Combat 3.

Competitions for prizes are taking place as part of the Xperia Mobile Gaming Arena. Yes, it?s sponsored by a brand of Android phones, but iOS users can enter and win as well. The multiplayer in these games is cross-platform, so players from all over the mobile spectrum will be competing. Interestingly, users of the Xperia Play Android phone may be at a slight advantage, as it features physical buttons and joystick trackpads that can be used with the game.

Right now, different criteria are being used for different competitions. For example, the first competition that ran until August 26th was one for most kills. The winner gets $250, second place $100, third place $50. MLG and XMGA claim to be giving away over $5000 worth of prices over the life of the contests, which will include both N.O.V.A. 3 and Modern Combat 3. The leaderboards also include listings for wins, headshots, highest kill streak, and captured flags, so future competitions could be based on other factors.

Anyone can sign up to participate. All they need to do is to sign up for an MLG account from their website, and link it to their Gameloft Live account that they?re already using for playing online, and they?ll be entered into the XMGA event when they play N.O.V.A. 3. There are no special playlists or rulesets to play in, so players just need to play the game and do well in order to possibly win prizes.

I spoke with Andrew ?Bravo? Dudynsky, who?s a professional gamer, coach, and commentator who has been playing N.O.V.A. 3. He claims that ?Mobile games have gotten a bad rap amongst competitive and hardcore gamers for several reasons. Traditionally, the controls, user interface, and graphics have been sub-par in most mobile titles. With a game like N.O.V.A. 3, however, you?ve got familiar controls and UI?and graphics that create a genuinely immersive experience that still provides an ?arcade-shooter? feel. The N.O.V.A. series was the first mobile shooter that made me say ?wow.??

With this being a major recognition of mobile gaming as a serious endeavor, I asked ?Bravo? if he thinks competitive gaming and mobile gaming will be crossing paths in the future. He believes ?we?ll see more developers focusing on competitive mobile titles ? this will result in more competitors, more attention, and ultimately more professionally ran tournaments, like the XMGA from MLG.?

While it may be some time before these games are showcased as major competitive games, at least this is a headway into the door. As well, the games had a presence at Sony?s booth at the upcoming MLG event in Raleigh. Baby steps for serious mobile gaming.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? An American-born Taliban fighter imprisoned in Indiana will try to convince a federal judge in a trial starting Monday that his religious freedom trumps security concerns. The trial, years in the making, will be closely watched because of its implications for prisoners' rights in the age of terrorism.

John Walker Lindh was charged with supporting terrorists after he was captured by U.S. troops in Afghanistan and later pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Lindh, 31, is serving a 20-year sentence at a federal facility in Terre Haute where he and other inmates have severely limited contact with the outside world. The Muslim convert claims his religious rights are being violated because the prison deprives him of daily group prayer.

Muslims are required to pray five times a day, and the Hanbali school to which Lindh belongs requires group prayer if it is possible. But inmates in the Communications Management Unit are allowed to pray together only once a week except during Ramadan. At other times, they must pray in their individual cells. Lindh says that doesn't meet the Quran's requirements and is inappropriate because he is forced to kneel in close proximity to his toilet.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, which is representing Lindh, contends the policy violates a federal law barring the government from restricting religious activities without showing a compelling need.

"This is an open unit where prisoners are basically out all day," said ACLU legal director Ken Falk, noting that inmates are allowed to play basketball and board games, watch television and converse as long as they speak English so the guards can understand.

"They can do basically any peaceful activity except praying," he said. "It makes no sense to say this is one activity we're going to prohibit in the name of security."

Joe Hogsett, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, said he believes decisions about prison regulations are best made by prison officials, "not by convicted terrorists and other dangerous criminals who reside there."

"Mr. Lindh is allowed to pray in his cell; he's allowed to pray wherever he happens to be as many times every day as his religion suggests to him that he should," Hogsett said. "Where the rules must draw the line is how often must prison officials allow prisoners to congregate together?"

Attorneys for the government maintain that Lindh's own behavior since he was placed in the unit in 2007 proves the risks of allowing group prayer.

The government says in court documents that Lindh delivered a "radical, all-Arabic sermon" to other Muslim prisoners in February that was in keeping with techniques in a manual seized from al-Qaida members that details how terrorists should conduct themselves when they are imprisoned.

Lindh's sermon proves "that religious activities led by Muslim inmates are being used as a vehicle for radicalization and violence in the CMU," the government claims.

Falk said Lindh's speech wasn't radical and was given during the weekly prayer that inmates are permitted. He said Lindh was not disciplined for the speech.

The self-contained unit in which Lindh resides has 43 inmates, 24 of whom are Muslim. Inmates are under open and covert audio and video surveillance, and except for talks with their attorney, all of their phone calls are monitored. Prisoners are not allowed to touch their family members when they come for their tightly limited visits. They must speak English at all times except when reciting ritual prayers in Arabic.

Without such tight security, the government claims, the prisoners would be able to conspire with outsiders to commit terrorist or criminal acts.

According to court documents, daily prayers were allowed from the time the unit opened in 2006 until May 2007, when Muslim inmates refused to stop in the middle of a prayer to return to their cells during a fire emergency.

The lawsuit was originally filed in 2009 by two Muslim inmates in the unit. Lindh joined the lawsuit in 2010, and the case has drawn far more attention since then. The other plaintiffs have dropped out as they were released from prison or transferred to other units.

Thomas Farr, a former diplomat who teaches at Georgetown University and studies religion and terrorism, said Lindh should be able to practice his religion but that prison officials have a responsibility to ensure he can't plan or carry out any attacks.

"That is why he is in prison and if that is not a compelling state interest I do not know what is," Farr said.

Stanford University terrorism expert Martha Crenshaw said prison officials have legitimate security concerns but questioned how dangerous Lindh really was, noting that he was not a leader or an influential cleric. Even the government says Lindh is currently characterized as a minimum-security prisoner.

He had been charged with conspiring to kill Americans and support terrorists, but those charges were dropped in a plea agreement. He is serving a 20-year sentence for supplying services to the now-defunct Taliban government of Afghanistan and carrying explosives for them and is eligible for release in 2019.

"The fact that the charge of conspiring to kill Americans was dropped could be considered evidence that he was not a personally violent jihadist," Crenshaw said in an email.

"Certainly after 9/11 the pendulum has swung toward preventing terrorism at almost any cost," Crenshaw said. "I would like to think that it could be swinging back, but it swings slowly. Once established, routines are hard to change."

Groups to push marriage equality during DNC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? The constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in the host state of the Democratic National Convention has stirred anger and resentment among advocates for marriage equality, many of whom are converging on Charlotte this weekend for the city's gay pride festival.

Organizers say they hope the festival will draw attention to the issue and create momentum that lasts through the political convention that starts the following week. Some of the thousands of protesters expected at the convention will be demonstrating for gay marriage.

"We're excited that the convention is in Charlotte," said David Webb, one of the pride festival's organizers. "But we also want to show that we're united and will continue to push for change."

When North Carolina voters passed the constitutional amendment in May, supporters of gay marriage first demanded that Democrats rethink Charlotte as the location of their convention. But advocates have since seized on the party gathering as a high-profile chance to make their message heard ? with support from the party itself. The national party is expected to approve marriage equality as part of its national platform during the convention being held from Sept. 4-6.

For the first two days, the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte's downtown will be the main venue. On the last day, President Barack Obama will make his acceptance speech at the 74,000-seat outdoor Bank of America Stadium where the city's NFL team plays.

Webb said public events like the festival and convention are important opportunities to rally same-sex couples who were discouraged by the North Carolina vote.

"It's an opportunity for the community to say, 'Yes. The state may have passed an amendment limiting our liberties, but we're going to keep fighting.' This is an opportunity to show the community and ourselves that, you know what, we're not down and out," he said.

When the Democratic Party picked Charlotte to host the convention, the proposal to change North Carolina's constitution was not on the ballot. Like so many states, same-sex marriage already was illegal in North Carolina.

Voters approved the amendment declaring that marriage between a man and woman is the only legal domestic union, prompting angry supporters of same-sex marriage to urge Democrats to move the convention. President Barack Obama stated his support for gay marriage a day after the North Carolina vote.

Democrats have been trying to address the issue. The national Democratic Party's platform committee recently endorsed gay marriage for the first time and called for the repeal of a federal law that recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman.

The platform is a broad statement of the party's priorities on the economy, social issues and national defense that's up for approval at the convention.

Scott Dibble, a committee member and a state senator from Minnesota, said support for gay marriage can attract new voters.

"Young people are looking for a political home right now. This has become a defining moral question of our time," said Dibble, who is gay.

The platform says Democrats support "marriage equality" and the "movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples."

J. Michael Bitzer, a political science and history professor at Catawba College, said Democrats can use the North Carolina vote as "rallying cry for their platform."

"But I think it kinds of sets up an awkwardness that the national Democrats will ratify or solidify their support for marriage equality in a state that recently banned gay marriage," he said

The convention creates an opportunity for more dialogue about same-sex marriage, said the Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrar, executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality. Her group has been organizing the "We Do" campaign which advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

"This convention is a way to highlight some of these contentious issues because North Carolina helps illustrates what's going on. It's good to remind people what's going on here," Beach-Ferrar said.

She said it's an important issue. Same-sex couples don't have the same rights as married couples. That complicates issues such as benefits and adoption.

"For me, there's clearly a real urgency on the issue. And I'm eager for us to move beyond the very predictable polarized debate and actually start talking about how real people are being impacted by discriminatory laws and what the solution is," she said.

University of Sydney taking it to the streets to discover 'What Matters' to you

The interactive displays allow people to vote for what matters most to them.

Are you concerned about housing affordability? Sick of traffic congestion? Worried that your child may be obese? Alarmed by climate change?

The University of Sydney has taken its quest to find out what matters to people in Australia and all over the world to the heart of Sydney's CBD and the Chatswood business district to engage with our city about its concerns.

From 14 August the ready stream of suits, strollers, tourists and shoppers that pass through Martin Place, World Square and Chatswood have been greeted by interactive visual display sites that enable members of the public to participate in the University of Sydney's What Matters campaign and vote on topics of importance to them.

The World Square and Chatswood displays are active for a period of two weeks until 27 August, while the Martin Square display was live for one week.

The What Matters community engagement campaign is a digital campaign that brings together University of Sydney academics and our global community to talk about issues that affect us all.

Through a dedicated microsite some of the University's top researchers and graduates discuss how their research has made a difference in the world. Members of the public are invited to indicate whether issues highlighted on the site matter to them and find out more about these issues through video interviews and online forums with specialist 'leading light' academics or graduates.

By voting on the site the public can share with the University what matters to them, providing the University and the public with a unique way to interact, even if people have never studied here or set foot on our campus.

Since beginning in April tens of thousands of people globally have visited the What Matters site, with a significant proportion also casting votes on what matters to them.

So far topics on sustainability have proved to matter most to those who cast their vote, with the top two topics being 'solving climate change for future generations' and 'reducing our environmental footprint' followed by 'preventing human rights abuses'.

The World Square and Chatswood displays enable people to engage with five topics and cast a vote while the Martin Place display polled two different topics daily. Topics include those bound to touch a nerve with Sydneysiders such as traffic congestion and housing affordability, as well as more general themes such as refugee rights, marriage equality, support for the arts and mental health care.

"The idea of this campaign is to give people who don't venture onto our campuses or know much about our work a better idea of what we do and how it impacts on Australia and the global community," says University Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence.

"Although teaching students is a fundamental role of the University, our research is just as important and touches the lives of most Australians.

"If you've had a brush with cancer, have children at school or catch the bus to work, chances are we've got people doing research that interests you and affects your day-to-day life."

"The flipside of spreading the word on the breadth of our work is to find out which of the research areas featuring in the campaign resonate with people," Dr Spence says.
