Oregon State University Valley Library displays Northwest art among the books (photo gallery)

The primary library for Oregon State University, Valley Library displays much of its Northwest arts collection on the walls of its hallways.

The hallways are given names, i.e., Autzen Avenue is the sixth floor hallway and Whiteley Avenue is on the fifth floor.

The library itself is named for philanthropist F. Wayne Valley, who played football for Oregon State.

It is one of three libraries for the university, containing? 1.4 million volumes. Other OSU libraries are in Newport at the Hatfield Marine Science Center and in Bend at the Cascades Campus.

The library also contains more than 500,000 maps and government documents.

The library maintains public access computers where users can search our library catalog and access the online databases. Research help is available at the reference desk.

Non-OSU-connected users can borrow books and other items by providing proof of Oregon residency and a valid library card with a bar code to scan.

Valley Library also has a variety of special collections in its Library Archives. Most notable is the Linus and Ava Helen Pauling Papers collection, with 4,111 books and 2,230 boxes of material from the OSU alums. Pauling is the only winner of two unshared Nobel prizes (chemistry and peace). The OSU library staff says it would have been appropriate to share them with Ava Helen, his wife of 58 years.

The libary also has a publishing arm, OSU Press. It will publish the first biography of Ava Helen Pauling next year. More on the Paulings in a future post on this site.
