Body Piercing ? what's the point?

Whether it?s to rebel against authority or a form of self expression, body piercing has been done for centuries and practiced worldwide by both men and women. So step aside 80s punk rockers and Miami Vice fans ? the sporting of earrings and nose rings dates as far back as 1500-5000 years ago! A labret is another form of body piercing that is attached to the facial lip (labrum) and dates back to Mayan and Aztec times. It was commonly associated with high status particularly among the tribal women. A more extreme body piercing practiced by Ethiopian tribes is done in the form of lip stretching adorned with a disc called a ?pelele?. Most common piercings are found in the ear lobe, nose, tongue, eyebrow or navel and adorned with jewellery such as gold hoops, gemstones, bars and even thorns (ouch!).

Ear Piercing

Practiced since ancient times, earrings represented nobility and wealth. Egyptians, Romans and Greeks wore gold hoops, precious gemstones or pendants shaped like sacred birds and asps. In Europe, between the 4th and 16th century, the popularity of earrings weaned for women as the ears and head were often covered. However, during the middle ages and 16th century, earring wear increased for men. Earrings were worn by noblemen to commoners, poets to sailors in countries such as Spain, England and France.

Nose Piercing

Nose piercing has a long history as well. There is a biblical reference in the Book of Genesis to a nose ring being given to Rebeka. In ancient Indian Sanskrit literature, the Vedas refers to Lakshmi?s piercings. Nose piercing is a common piercing practice in India, Pakistan, Nepal, South Asia and in Australian aboriginal culture and has in recent years gained popularity in Europe and North America. In Indian culture, a piercing on the left nostril is thought to make childbirth easier and is regarded as a symbol of beauty and status. Piercing of the septum or bridge can also be done although it is not as common.

For many people, piercings are a symbol of their individuality, culture and beliefs. Sai Vachan Creations Inc. specializes in unique pieces that can help you showcase your own style. For more information visit them at www.saivachan.com.
